Waipara Village Winery is owned by Kym and Maggie Rayner but began life as Glenmark Wines under John McCaskey in 1987. It now bears the name of early Canterbury resident, farmer and surveyor Charles Torlesse. The mountain range which circles the Canterbury plains is named after him and he was at one time the biggest landowner in the area. The name Torlesse is also the name given to the underlying bedrock in New Zealand hence Torlesse = the bedrock of New Zealand. Kim is the head winemaker and Waipara Village Winery is self sufficient from crushing to bottling. A true family business. It is home to New Zealands only solera Port system and has been producing wine since 1991.
