In their quest for a cottage in the countryside Gary Marsh and Marg Eton- Marsh were told about an abandoned vineyard and set about resurrecting it in 2017. After two years of non stop labour, working full time jobs and doing all the vineyard work during their weekends the dream of the cottage in the country had evaporated and a vineyard was producing fruit. Just in time for the painful 2019 vintage Gary & Marg joined with Antony Worch of Alexandra Vintners to create a dry Riesling. It sold well and opened up the way for a second vintage of 4 different varietal wines. A dry Riesling, a medium sweet Riesling, a classic Pinot Gris and a slick Italian style Pinot Grigio.
The vineyard is a small 4.6 hectares, is north facing and the production kept to approximately 500 cases per year. The Waitaki Valley has a cool climate affected by the cooling ocean breezes which flow up the valley. The vineyard sits on limestone, alluvial greywacke and schist soils. Pinot Gris covers 1 ha, Pinot Grigio 1 ha, Riesling 0.5 ha, Gewurztraminer 0.3 ha and Pinot Noir 0.5 ha.
A newcomer to the Waitaki Valley but the message and goal for the Marshes is simple. Make good wine and drink it. That's what it's about.
